Family and Child Studies - Marriage and Family Therapy, M.S.

The master’s degree in Family and Child Studies - Marriage and Family Therapy prepares students to sit for the national MFT exam and apply for candidature as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist as dictated by Oklahoma’s State Board of Behavioral Health (BBHL). Courses are administered online and in-person and include a 2-semester practicum, which provides hands-on experience and research. This program has been reviewed and approved by the BBHL. Each course has been pre-assigned an academic category as is required by BBHL. Internship and Practicum requirements are a part of all Family and Child Studies graduate programs, as well as a required number of prerequisites.

Admission Requirements


Submit the following items to:

Application deadline is no later than the first Wednesday in March.

Admission to the graduate Family and Child Studies - Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) program is for the fall semester only.

 

• Online application for admission (www.uco.edu/graduate/).

• Official copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts from each institution attended with all degrees posted. All transcripts must be from accredited institutions. Undergraduate transcripts must show:*

  • A preferred minimum 2.75 GPA overall or 3.00 GPA in the last 60 hours attempted.
  • Preferred completion of the following prerequisite courses: FMCD 2213 or PTE 3133, FMCD 2223, FMCD 4413, FMCD 3313.

• Students with a native language other than English must submit evidence of English language proficiency. See Admission to Admission to Graduate Studies - English Language Proficiency  

• Three (3) letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation are requested through the online application portal.

• Current resume.

• Personal statement/professional orientation. *Students falling below these standards may qualify for conditional admission. See Admission to Graduate Studies  .

 

Other Requirements


• Plan of Study. Each student must file a plan of study with their graduate program advisor and the Jackson College of Graduate Studies (JCGS) by the end of the first semester of graduate work. The plan must be signed and dated by the student and the graduate program advisor before it can be considered official

• Academic Standards. Meet the following course work standards:

  • Overall GPA of 3.00 or higher.
  • No more than six hours of “C”.
  • No more than six advisor-approved hours from traditional correspondence courses.

• Final Requirements. Apply for graduation through the JCGS by advertised deadline
