The Graduate Faculty

The Graduate Faculty serves in a consultative role to the Jackson College of Graduate Studies (JCGS) and Graduate Council. The Graduate Council must approve new nontenure track associate members of the Graduate Faculty before the final printing of the semester schedule in which new members wish to teach. Faculty who are not members of the Graduate Faculty may not teach graduate courses unless approved by the Graduate Dean to do so for one semester on an emergency basis. There are two membership levels in the Graduate Faculty: Full Members and Associate Members.

Full Members of the Graduate Faculty

Full membership to the Graduate Faculty shall be granted to full-time faculty possessing an earned doctorate who are active in scholarship, creative endeavors, basic research and/or applied research as defined by the standards of the faculty member’s department and who are dedicated to the professional enhancement of their students, their disciplines, their College, the University, and the community.

Faculty in the College of Fine Arts and Design will be considered an exception to the earned doctorate requirement and will be eligible for Full Graduate Faculty membership if they possess an M.F.A. degree and 60 graduate hours in the teaching field. The Dean of Fine Arts and Design, upon advisement of Fine Arts and Design chairpersons will determine equivalence to the terminal degree and submit nominations to the Dean of the Graduate College for consideration. This exception applies to M.F.A. degrees in other colleges where the degree is considered terminal (i.e., Creative Writing).

In addition to the above stated nomination criteria, the following qualifications are required of all JCGS faculty candidates nominated for Full Membership:

1. Superior teaching ability supported by student evaluations (when available), chairperson evaluation and teaching innovation.
2. Active participation in research leading to publications and/or other appropriate scholarly/ artistic activities
3. Activities, performances, or exhibits commended by professionals in the candidate’s field of study.
4. Willingness and ability to supervise theses or mentor graduate students.

College Deans, at the recommendation of Department Chairs or their designees, will put forth a nomination of a candidate based on the stated criteria (full-time faculty status, possession of an earned doctorate, active in scholarship, creative endeavors, basic research and/or applied research as defined by the standards of the faculty member’s department and dedication to the professional enhancement of students, disciplines, College, the University, and the community). The Chair will put forth this nomination to the College Dean. The College Dean will put forth this nomination to the Dean of the Jackson College of Graduate Studies where, subsequent to satisfactory review, the nomination will be forwarded to the Graduate Council Membership Committee for recommendation to credential. The Dean of the JCGS will ultimately render a final credentialing decision based on these assessments and reviews.

Members of the University faculty who have not been granted full membership to the JCGS Graduate Faculty may request to teach graduate classes, serve on advisory committees and thesis committees upon nomination by the appropriate Department Chair, concurrence of the College Dean, recommendation of the Graduate Council Membership Committee, and approval by the Dean of the Jackson College of Graduate Studies.

Faculty members so approved are designated as Associate Members of the Graduate Faculty. Under no circumstance will faculty who are not Full Members or Associate Members of the Graduate Faculty teach graduate courses.

Associate Members of the Graduate Faculty:

Associate Graduate Faculty Membership can be full-time or part-time faculty. These appointments shall be subject to periodic (three-year) review.

Associate members of the JCGS are expected to possess 18 hours of graduate credit in the discipline of instruction or a discipline-specific track record verified by the Department Chair, College Dean, and Graduate Dean.

College Deans and Department Chairs are encouraged to develop and implement a Graduate Faculty Mentorship Program, for JCGS Associate Members, targeted at enhancing expertise and experience in graduate course development, graduate teaching, graduate research and funding administration, graduate student management, and graduate faculty ethics and professionalism.

During the initial three-year appointment, Associate Members are required to be mentored by an assigned Full Member of the Graduate Faculty. Mentorship will be commensurate with the experience level of the candidate and approved by the Graduate Dean and the Graduate Council. Graduate Faculty Mentors are not required to come from the discipline of the faculty member, easing the burden on small departments.
Associate Membership will be reviewed and evaluated by the JCGS Dean after three years, based upon contributions to active in scholarship, creative endeavors, basic and applied research as defined by the standards of the faculty member’s department, and dedicated to the professional enhancement of students, disciplines, their College, the University, and the Community. It is expected that Associate Members seeking continued JCGS faculty credentials will have demonstrated and documented additional accomplishments in each element since the last review.

Application for three-year Associate Membership on the JCGS Graduate Faculty is initiated by the Department Chair or the Chair’s Designee and forwarded to the Dean of the College for review, approval and recommendation to the JCGS Dean. The Graduate Dean will review the application and forward it to the Membership Committee of the Graduate Council for review and recommendation to the Graduate Dean. Ultimate approval of Associate Membership nominations is the purview of the JCGS Dean.

The Graduate Faculty Membership Nomination Form, available in the Jackson College of Graduate Studies, will be sent to the Graduate Dean, and will include a current curriculum vitae, a letter of application, transcripts, and other supportive information if requested.

Emergency Associate Memberships, of one-semester duration, may be granted by the Dean of the Jackson College of Graduate Studies.

A list of approved nominations for Graduate Faculty Full and Associate Membership will be forwarded to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, College Deans, and Department chairpersons.

Nominations and Application Documents for Full Membership or Associate Membership in the JCGS Graduate Faculty must be received and acted upon before the final printing of the semester schedule in which the faculty member intends to teach.

Duties of the Graduate Faculty:

Specific duties of the Graduate Faculty, in addition to other responsibilities as University Faculty members, include the following:

1. Teach courses open to graduate students only.
2. Seek out undergraduate students of outstanding ability and encourage them to pursue graduate study.
3. Conduct graduate classes and seminars that stimulate creativity and contribute to the growth and development of independent scholarly attitudes and performance.
4. Participate in research which has intrinsic scholarly or artistic value and which will motivate the students to similar endeavor.
5. Supervise research/artistic projects of graduate students when requested.
6. Encourage informal activities among students leading to scholarly or artistic production.
7. Maintain standards of student performance to prepare graduates for the professional and scholarly responsibilities of an educated person in a free society.
8. Review the reports of the Graduate Council and the various committees of the Jackson College of Graduate Studies and determine the general direction of the Jackson College of Graduate Studies.

The Graduate Faculty shall meet at least once each year during the month of April. A quorum for transacting business shall be the number present at the meeting. Special meetings may be called by the Dean of the Jackson College of Graduate Studies whenever the action of the Graduate Faculty is needed. A special meeting must be called if ten percent of the Graduate Faculty so petition.
