The Master of Education in School Counseling - School and Professional Counseling combines 33 hours of the necessary coursework to be eligible to take the Oklahoma School Counseling exam to become a School Counselor at the K-12 level. This program also includes the additional 27 hours required to be eligible to take the Licensed Professional Counselor exam in the state of Oklahoma. School Counselors will be better prepared to meet the challenges of mental health issues among their students and will have the option to not only work as a School Counselor but also a Licensed Professional Counselor in the public school setting or the community.

Admission Requirements


Submit the following items to:

• Online application for admission (www.uco.edu/graduate/).

• Official copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts from each institution attended with all degrees posted. All transcripts must be from accredited institutions. Undergraduate transcripts must show a minimum 2.75 GPA overall or 3.00 GPA in the last 60 hours attempted.*

• Students with a native language other than English must submit evidence of English language proficiency. See Admission to Graduate Studies - English Language Proficiency  

• A current teaching certificate or completion of 6 hours as follows: ESFR 5523 and ESFR 5533 within 12 hours of completed program coursework.

*Students falling below these standards may qualify for conditional admission. See Admission to Graduate Studies  

Other Requirements


• Plan of Study. Each student must file a plan of study with their graduate program advisor and the Jackson College of Graduate Studies (JCGS) by the end of the first semester of graduate work. The plan must be signed and dated by the student and the program coordinator before it can be considered official.

• Academic Standards. Meet the following course work standards:

  • Overall GPA of 3.00 or higher.
  • No more than six hours of “C”.
  • No more than six advisor-approved hours from traditional correspondence courses.

• Final Requirements. Apply for graduation through the JCGS by advertised deadline.

Graduation Requirements


Required Courses: 48 Hours


*GUID 5950 Internship in School Counsel and GUID 5900 Practicum in Prof Counsel. These should be the last courses in the program and require permission for entry. Internship and practicum applications are available from the program coordinator. For the fall semester, an application must be in by the sixth week of the previous spring Semester: for the spring semester by the sixth week of the fall semester. Students must complete all theory courses (GUID 5163, 5113, 5153).

TOTAL HOURS REQUIRED: 60 HOURS


After completion of a Master of Education degree in School and Professional Counseling, graduates meet the requirements to apply to the Oklahoma Board of Behavioral Health to take the National Counselor Exam (NCE).
