The Master of Education in Reading curriculum is designed to meet the International Literacy Association’s Standards for the Preparation of Literacy Professionals 2017. Candidates completing the degree requirements will be eligible to apply for PreK-12 Certification as a Reading Specialist, as outlined by the Oklahoma State Department of Education. A graduate curriculum in Reading uses multiple educational settings to prepare students for positions as reading consultants, reading teachers in public and private education, remedial reading teachers, reading clinicians, directors of reading programs, reading supervisors, reading diagnosticians, reading coaches, reading interventionists, and reading coordinators.

		Admission Requirements
 Submit the following items to:                                   Jackson College of Graduate Studies                                    100 N. University Drive, NUC 404                                    Edmond, OK 73034     • Online application for admission (www.uco.edu/graduate/).  • Official copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts from each institution attended with all degrees posted. All transcripts must be from accredited institutions. Undergraduate transcripts must show: *   - A minimum 2.75 GPA overall or 2.75 GPA in the last 60 hours attempted.
  - Completion of a course in Children’s or Adolescent Literature OR the student will need to choose one of the IME or ELED courses as their selection under Area 2, Language and Literacy, in the Professional Education section of the plan of study. ◦ Completion of a 3-hour course in Reading Methods or Language Arts Methods, which must be taken before the Reading courses.
    • Students with a native language other than English must submit evidence of English language proficiency.  • Plan of Study. Each student must file a plan of study with their graduate program advisor and the Jackson College of Graduate Studies (JCGS) by the end of the first semester of graduate work. The plan must be signed and dated by the student and the graduate program advisor before it can be considered official.  • Academic Standards. Meet the following course work standards:   - Overall GPA of 3.00 or higher.
  - No more than six hours of “C”.
  - No more than six advisor-approved hours from traditional correspondence courses.
    • Final Requirements. Apply for graduation through the JCGS by advertised deadline.  • Applicants must hold a valid Oklahoma teaching license/ certification prior to completion of the program. Required Courses: 22 Hours
 Professional Courses: 10-12 Hours
 Complete one course in each area Area 2 - Language and Literacy
 Area 4 - Diversity Education
 TOTAL HOURS REQUIRED: 32-34 HOURS
