Curriculum and Instruction - Early Childhood Education, M.Ed.

The Early Childhood Education program is designed to provide an advanced program of study focusing on the developmentally appropriate care and education of children from birth through age eight within various early childhood and elementary school settings. Students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate a basic knowledge of educational research, including research procedures and methods; sources and formats utilized for presenting education research; critical review of research reports; and the preparation and defense of a research proposal.

Admission Requirements


Submit the following items to:

• Online application for admission (www.uco.edu/graduate/).

• Official copies of graduate and undergraduate transcripts from each institute attended with all degrees posted. All transcripts must be from accredited institutions. Undergraduate transcripts must show a minimum 2.75 overall GPA or 2.75 GPA in the last 60 hours attempted.*

• Students with a native language other than English must submit evidence of English language proficiency. See Admission to Graduate Studies - English Language Proficiency  .

*Students falling below these standards may qualify for conditional admission. See Admission to Graduate Studies  

Other Requirements


• Plan of Study. Each student must file a plan of study with their graduate advisor and the Jackson College of Graduate Studies (JCGS) by the end of the first semester of graduate work. The plan must be signed and dated by the student and the graduate program advisor before it can be official.

• Academic Standards. Meet the following course work standards:

  • Overall GPA of 3.00 of higher
  • Passing all core courses with at least a “B”, and having no more than six credit hours of “C”.
  • No more than six advisor-approved hours from traditional correspondence courses.

• Final Requirements. Apply for graduation through the JCGS by the advertised deadline.

Accelerated Degree Pathway: B.S. to M.Ed.


UCO’s Early Childhood Education Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction has partnered with the B.S. in Early Childhood Education so that approved students may take up to ten credit hours of 5000-level ECED/ELED courses during their senior year of the B.S. program. These courses will count toward both the B.S. and M.Ed. degrees. A formal application to the M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education program and an approval from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction are required. Up to ten credit hours of the following courses can be used to satisfy both the B.S. in Early Childhood Education and the M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction - Early Childhood Education: ECED 5332 Science in Early Childhood, ECED 5342 Social Studies in Early Childhood, ELED 5263 Assessment/Intervention Reading K-3, ELED 5323 Teaching Mathematics in Preschool/Primary.
