Composition and Rhetoric, M.A.

The master’s degree in Composition and Rhetoric provides focused study in composition pedagogy, the history of rhetoric, and composition and rhetorical theory and prepares students for post-secondary teaching and doctoral-level research in these fields.

Admission Requirements

  • Online application for admission (www.uco.edu/graduate/).
  • Official copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts from each institution attended with all degrees posted. All transcripts must be from accredited institutions.
  • Transcripts must show:
    • A minimum 3.0 undergraduate GPA (overall) or 3.0 undergraduate GPA (last 60 hours completed); and 18 hours of English (3000- or above) with a 3.0 GPA.
    • Students may gain conditional admission by achieving a score of 150 (verbal) and 4.5 (analytical writing) on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
  • Students with a native language other than English must submit evidence of English language proficiency. See Admission to Graduate Studies  - English Language Proficiency.

*Students falling below these standards may qualify for conditional admission. See Admission to Graduate Studies .

Other Requirements


  • Plan of Study. Each student must file a plan of study with his/ her graduate program advisor and the Jackson College of Graduate Studies (JCGS) by the end of the first semester of graduate work. The plan must be signed and dated by the graduate program advisor before it can be considered official.
  • Academic Standards. Meet the following coursework standards:
    • Overall GPA of 3.00 or higher.
    • No more than six hours of “C”.
    • No more than six advisor-approved hours from traditional correspondence courses.
    • At least 21 of the 33 total hours must be in Graduate English courses.
  • Language Requirement. Demonstrate reading knowledge of a second language in one of the following ways:
    • Achieve a level of Advanced Low on higher on an ACTFL Reading Test.
    • Earn a “C” or better in a minimum of six credit hours in a single second language at the University of Central Oklahoma. These hours will not count toward the M.A. degree.
    • Produce evidence of having earned a “C” or better in a minimum of six credit hours in a single second language at an approved college or university. These hours will not count toward the M.A. degree.
  • Thesis or Portfolio Requirement. Complete an acceptable thesis, including an oral defense, or portfolio, including an oral examination.
  • Final Requirements. Apply for graduation through the JCGS by advertised deadline.

Graduation Requirements


English Electives: 9 Hours


Nine hours of English (ENG) coursework at the 5000-level with a focus on Rhetoric or Technical Writing, with advisor approval.

Approved Electives: 3 Hours


Three hours of 5000-level coursework in English or a related field, with advisor approval.

TOTAL HOURS REQUIRED: 33 HOURS


Accelerated Degree Pathway: BA to MA


Students enrolled in the Technical Writing B.A. program who are accpeted into the Accelerated Degree Pathway for the Composition and Rhetoric M.A. program may take 5000-level courses up to a maximum of 10 hours during the senior year of the bachelor’s degree. These courses will count toward both the B.A. and M.A. degrees. The approved graduate courses are ENG 5303 Technical Editing , ENG 5473 Advanced Composition , and ENG 5493 Document Design . Admission requires a 3.0 undergraduate GPA and approval of the Technical Writing/Composition and Rhetoric B.A./M.A. Committee.
