Sociology - Substance Abuse Studies: 64-72 Minimum Required Hours
Required Foundation Courses for Sociology: 31 Credit Hours
Foundation Courses for Substance Abuse Studies: 33 Credit Hours
Modern Language Requirement: 0-8 Credit Hours
All students completing a B.A. in Sociology - Substance Abuse Studies shall complete the first two semesters of a second language. Students may alternatively fulfill the language requirement by proof of academic work in the second language (CLEP test through the Elementary II level, for example SPAN 1224), four years of high school language courses, or transfer work from another institution.
Electives to bring total to: 124 Minimum Required Hours
Students interested in earning a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Sociology with an option in Substance Abuse Studies must receive special admission to the program. Applications for admission are available in the Department of Sociology, Gerontology, and Substance Abuse Studies.
Minimum Grade Requirements
- Average in (a) all college course work, and (b) course work at UCO: 2.00
- Average in major courses: 2.50
Accelerated Degree Pathway (ADP)
Students wishing to apply for the Accelerated BA/MA Program in Substance Abuse Studies/Addictions Counseling may substitute the following graduate courses as seniors under the Graduate College’s Accelerated Degree Program (ADP) Policy:
- SAS 5313 Advanced Family Counseling (instead of SAS 4273 Substance Abuse and the Family)
- SAS 5353 Advanced Group Dynamics (instead of SAS 4413 Group Dynamics in Substance Abuse Counseling)
- SAS 5523 Cultural Sensitivity for Addiction Treatment (instead of SAS 4303 Substance Abuse in Special Populations)
Admission requires a 3.0 undergraduate GPA and application to and approval of the Substance Abuse Studies/Addictions Counseling Accelerated Program BA/MA Committee. Students may enroll in the three 5000-level courses as part of the accelerated program.
