MUS 3112 - Musicology Studies: Music as a Social Practice


This course will introduce music as a social practice in both western and non-western cultures, including indigenous rituals. Other topics may include musical styles, structures, and instruments, and their relationship to race, gender, politics, economics, and/or religion. Through selected case studies of traditional and contemporary practices in diverse geographic regions, students will explore sociological and anthropological practices of global acts of musicking. The course is designed to build a foundation of research, writing, and study skills, in addition to ethnomusicology methodologies. 

Credit Hours: 2

Prerequisites: MUS 1183  AND MUS 2223  

Enrollment Restrictions: Admission to the School of Music.
