The Nursing Master of Science degree aims to cater to the growing global demand for healthcare professionals with advanced knowledge in nursing. The transformative educational experiences prepare graduates to positively impact the local, state, and global communities. The degree integrates the Central Six tenets of transformative learning, including Health and Wellness, Discipline Knowledge, Leadership, Research, Scholarly and Creative Activities, and Service Learning and Civic Engagement.

Admission Requirements


Submit the following items to:

  • Students are admitted to the graduate nursing program in Fall. The application deadline is August 1st; exceptions may be considered by the graduate advisor for extenuating circumstances.

• Online application for admission (www.uco.edu/graduate/).

• Official copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts from each institution attended with all degrees posted. All transcripts must be from accredited institutions. Application materials and undergraduate transcripts must show:

  • A minimum 3.00 GPA overall or 3.00 GPA in the last 60 hours attempted.
  • Baccalaureate degree with a major in nursing from a program that has received nursing accreditation from an agency approved by the Department of Education or its equivalent with at least a 3.00 GPA.
  • A current unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state in which the direct care experiences will take place.
  • lntematlonal students must have a current unrestricted license to practice in the country in which direct care experiences will take place or proof of NCLEX exam completion.
  • International students must also submit a copy of their passport.
  • Students who are in the process of obtaining a license as a registered nurse may take up to nine graduate credit hours prior to obtaining their license.
  • Complete an undergraduate or graduate course in statistics.

• A written statement of purpose describing the applicant’s plans and rationale for graduate study at UCO.

• Application may be made for conditional admission by students having an overall undergraduate GPA of at least 2.50 or at least 2.25 with five years having passed since the date of the first bachelor’s degree.

• Students with a native language other than English and who do not have a current unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Oklahoma must submit evidence of English language proficiency as reflected by one of the following to meet Oklahoma Licensure and be admitted to the program:

  • Test of English Language Proficiency Score (TOEFL-iBT) of 26 Speaking and 83 Total.
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score 6.5 (academic format) or 7.0 (spoken band)

• Formal approval by the selection committee is required for admission.

Other Requirements


• Plan of Study. Each student must file a plan of study with their graduate program advisor and the Jackson College of Graduate Studies (JCGS) by the end of the first semester of graduate work. The plan must be signed and dated by the student and the graduate program advisor before it can be considered official.

• Academic Standards. Meet the following course work standards:

  • Overall GPA of 3.00 or higher.
  • No grade below ”C” is acceptable for graduate credit.
  • No more than six (6) semester hours of “C” shall be applied toward the degree.

• Any incomplete grades awarded must have work completed before additional course enrollments are allowed.

Graduation Requirements


Accelerated Degree Pathway: B.S. to M.S.


Accelerated Degree Pathway students who are accepted to the undergraduate RN to B.S. degree in Nursing may apply to take up to a maximum of nine hours of 5000-level Nursing courses with the approval of the Graduate Advisor. These courses will count toward both the B.S. in Nursing and M.S in Nursing degrees. During the last semester of their junior year or during their senior year, an undergraduate student with a 3.0 overall GPA may apply for admission to the Accelerated Degree Pathway.
