OCCC Associate in Art - Music to UCO Bachelor of Music - Music - Jazz Performance

The University of Central Oklahoma (UCO), in collaboration with Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC), participates in articulated transfer agreements to assist students in transferring smoothly from the associate degree to the baccalaureate degree. These agreements express a shared commitment to student access and success in higher education.

This document specifies courses to be taken at OCCC and courses to be taken at UCO to meet this agreement.

Associate in Art (A.A.) - Music

Students should refer to the associate degree requirements and an academic advisor for associate degree details to ensure a successful transition to UCO.

Oklahoma City Community College General Education

This section is an outline of the general education pattern at OCCC common to all majors. Some general education areas may vary by major. In those areas, consult an academic advisor or refer to the OCCC catalog or requirement sheet. An Associate in Science (A.S.) or Associate in Art (A.A.) degree from an accredited Oklahoma institution that includes the OSRHE minimum requirements will satisfy the UCO University Core.

Additional Requirements

Students will need at least one 3-hour course from the following disciplines: Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, Economics, Fine Arts (Art, Music, and Theatre), or Modern Languages. Credited courses completed as part of the A.A. or A.S. that do not meet a specific UCO degree requirement transfer to UCO as electives and may count toward the 124-hour minimum. Students should consult an academic advisor to determine how elective courses apply toward the bachelor’s degree. Students must meet all bachelor’s degree requirements at UCO to include minimums of:

40 hours of upper division coursework
30 hours in residence at UCO
15 of the last 30 hours must be taken in residence at UCO
60 hours from baccalaureate granting institutions
124 total hours

To be chosen from Jazz Ensemble, Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble, Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, or Concert Choir. Jazz Ensemble must be taken 8 times minimum, and any other listed ensembles must be taken 4 times minimum.

Other Requirements for the B.M. Degree

Before students can be accepted into the B.M. Degree, they must demonstrate, through audition, a repertory and technical proficiency demonstrating a reasonable expectation for completion of the degree.

All students (except piano majors) must enroll in Class Piano (MPER 2731 and 2831) the first two semesters of study. The minimum grade of C in each course demonstrates proficiency at that level.

Students possessing proficiency equal to successful completion of Class Piano II (MPER 2831) may take a Piano Placement Examination to determine their eligibility to enroll in an appropriate level of Applied Piano or Applied Jazz Piano (MPER 1000, 2000, 3020, 4000) as an alternative to Class Piano I and II. A minimum of four semester credits in piano is still required except for piano majors, in which case this requirement would be redundant with Applied Lessons. Piano majors must select four credits of MUS or MUED 3000/4000 level electives as a substitute.

Students in applied music progress according to stated repertoire commensurate with the level of study and as demonstrated in a juried performance. Access to upper division 3000 and 4000 level study and to the junior level recital is authorized by the division faculty upon completion of a juried performance at the preceding level with a grade of B or higher. Continuation in the Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance program is granted at the end of the second semester of 2000 level study with a jury grade of B or higher. Any request for admission to the program coming later in the student’s career will be by special audition.

Performance majors must complete at least 16 hours of applied study at least 8 of which must be upper division with at least 4 of those at the 4000 level.

Students enrolled in Junior Recital (MPER 3811) or Senior Recital (MPER 4812) must pass a pre-recital jury at least two weeks prior to the recital, and before the final day of the semester to drop courses. Each performance area will determine what literature is appropriate for junior or senior level recitals.

Minimum Grade Requirements

Average in all college course work and course work at UCO: 2.75
A grade of “B” or better must be earned in all major applied courses.
A grade of “C” or better must be earned in all other courses in the major to count toward meeting degree requirements, except for applied major courses.

Electives

All UCO degrees require a minimum of 124 credit hours. Electives may be needed to bring total credit hours to 124.

Transfer Policies

Transfer policies are available in the Introduction for Program-to-Program Agreements. This agreement does not include all possible variations for transfer with these programs/majors. The Academic Advisors along with the information in the official catalogs at both institutions are critical to the understanding of the specifics of degree completion.
