The Nursing Master of Science degree will help to provide for the increasing global need of health care practitioners with expanded nursing knowledge. The degree directly addresses the University of Central Oklahoma’s mission to contribute to the intellectual, cultural, economic and social advancement of the communities and individuals it serves. The inclusion of 100 practicum hours facilitates the participation of students in transformative educational experiences that directly benefit the Oklahoma City metro area community. The degree integrates each of the Central Six tenets of transformative learning including Health and Wellness, Discipline Knowledge, Leadership, Problem Solving (Research, Scholarly and Creative Activities), Service Learning and Civic Engagement.

Admission Requirements


Submit the following items to:

• Online application for admission (www.uco.edu/graduate/).

• Official copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts from each institution attended with all degrees posted. All transcripts must be from accredited institutions. Application materials and undergraduate transcripts must show:

  • A minimum 3.00 GPA overall or 3.00 GPA in the last 60 hours attempted.
  • Baccalaureate degree with a major in nursing from a program that has received nursing accreditation from an agency approved by the Department of Education or its equivalent with at least a 3.00 GPA.
  • Preference will be given to individuals with a current unrestricted license to practice as a Registered nurse in the state of Oklahoma. Conditional admission will be considered for individuals in the process of obtaining licensure.
  • Complete an undergraduate or graduate course in statistics.

• A written statement of purpose describing the applicant’s plans and rationale for graduate study at UCO.

• Application may be made for conditional admission by students having an overall undergraduate GPA of at least 2.50 or at least 2.25 with five years having passed since the date of the first bachelor’s degree.

• Students with a native language other than English and who do not have a current unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Oklahoma must submit evidence of English language proficiency as reflected by one of the following to meet Oklahoma Licensure and be admitted to the program:

  • Test of English Language Proficiency Score (TOEFL-iBT) of 26 Speaking and 83 Total.
  • Test of English for International Communications (TOEIC) score for Listening and Reading of 725, for Speaking and Writing of 140.
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score 6.5 (academic format) or 7.0 (spoken band)
  • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) score 3 Speaking and 81 Total.

• Formal approval by the selection committee is required for admission.

Other Requirements


• Plan of Study. Each student must file a plan of study with their graduate program advisor and the Jackson College of Graduate Studies (JCGS) by the end of the first semester of graduate work. The plan must be signed and dated by the student and the graduate program advisor before it can be considered official.

• Academic Standards. Meet the following course work standards:

  • Overall GPA of 3.00 or higher.
  • No more than 6 hours of “C” or lower may be repeated.
  • Courses with a grade lower than B do not apply toward graduation.

• Any incomplete grades awarded must have work completed before additional course enrollments are allowed.

Graduation Requirements


Accelerated Degree Pathway: B.S. to M.S.


Accelerated Degree Pathway students who are accepted to the undergraduate RN to B.S. degree in Nursing may apply to take up to a maximum of nine hours during their senior year of the bachelor’s degree. These courses will count toward both the B.S. in Nursing and M.S in Nursing degrees. The approved graduate courses are NURS 5323 Leadership in Healthcare Organizations, NURS 5353 Legal/Ethical Issues in Healthcare, and NURS 5113 Advanced Pathophysiology. During the last semester of their junior year or within 30 hours of graduation, undergraduate students with a 3.0 overall GPA may apply for admission to the Accelerated Degree Pathway.
